Exploring “The Greek Class” by Han Kang: a literary journey in a Borgean vein

Literature not only transports us to other worlds, but also invites us to look at ourselves in the mirror of words. In this line, and with the intention of connecting with fellow journalists and writers from other chapters, AMMPE Argentina is holding a reading clinic dedicated to The Greek Class by the Nobel Prize-winning Korean writer Han Kang, a proposal that seeks to unravel the multiple layers of this novel.

The next and last meeting, scheduled for Thursday, April 10, will be attended by Sunme Yoon, the Spanish translator of Han Kang's work, directly from Korea. The idea is to discuss the challenges and decisions involved in literary translation and to explore her own perspectives on the novel.

So far, the experience has been extremely enriching. Throughout the three previous meetings, there was a genuine and spontaneous reflection on topics such as loneliness, silence, subjectivity and language.

The journalist Analía Vazquez and the writer Alelí Gotlip, in charge of the coordination of the clinic, analyzed the narrative strategies and formal and content relations between Kang's book and Borge's work. Thus, in each of the appointments, nuances were explored and bridges were drawn that resulted in a stimulating exchange.

“As the Argentine chapter of AMMPE is reorganizing, we decided to start with this Reading Clinic with the desire to strengthen internal ties and with the rest of the chapters. The choice of the work was not random: we wanted the subject matter to involve both journalists and writers. In addition, although Han Kang, the author, is Korean, in this novel she dialogues with Borges' work. Therefore, it resonates with our identity,” said Vázquez and Gotlip.

They also showed their enthusiasm for Yoon's presence at the last meeting: “She was trained in the City of Buenos Aires and will accompany us to walk a bridge between the two cultures and language. We hope to continue enriching ourselves with this type of exchange within the framework of AMMPE World”.

In addition to the interesting reflections of the participants, María Clara Martínez Nogueras contributed her exquisite voice to the reading of some passages from the book.
