Mexican Journalists ask for Justice and a Stop to the Murder of their Colleagues

Three Mexican journalists, José Luis Gamboa, Margarito Martínez Esquivel, and just a week later Lourdes Maldonado, were killed in Mexico along the first month in 2022. During the last three years Mexico sums up 28 journalists who have been killed.

On January 25, people in 47 cities around Mexico rallied asking for justice. All who turned out in the streets demanded an answer from the authorities: “You don´t kill truth by killing journalists, we shall not shut up. Not one more”.

With courage, rage, and demanding justice, Mexican journalists throughout the country have had only one voice and one will: stop the murder of those who work in the news. In the three sad events of the first month of the year, there has been no answer for these murders, that remain unpunished.

In the last three years, 28 journalists have been murdered. “Article 19” (international organization founded in 1987 that ensures free of speech and the right to be informed) has delivered information that sums 128 murders from year 2000 up to now.

Those who work in journalism understand that to obtain justice is necessary to demand, press, speak out, and not be silent in order to obtain justice from those in charge. It is the only way in which de murder of fellow mates, journalists, fathers, mothers, children, and family do not become a cold number in a statistics sheet.

Today we are speaking out, demanding impunity to stop, demanding the threats to fellow mates to stop, and demanding that our work be dignified. When those responsible of making the news are shut down, not only their voice is killed, also democracy and freedom of expression are at stake.
