AMMPE World president visits Guatemala
"The AMMPE Guatemala chapter has stood out for 54 years for leading work in the areas of culture, education and literary promotion," said Elia Simeone, president of the Worldwide Association of Women Journalists and Writers (AMMPE World), during her recent visit to Guatemala, in which she fulfilled a vast agenda prepared by the host chapter headed by engineer Ana María Sánchez-Latour. From Monday June 5 to Friday June 9, Elia Simeone met with the president of AMMPE Guatemala and members of this chapter. AMMPE Guatemala is the first national chapter to be formed under the umbrella of the world entity, and in fact, it was born at the same time as AMMPE, in 1969. Elia Simeone's first activity in the Central American country was a visit to the Chilean ambassador to Guatemala, Luis Felipe Artal. She then participated in a tour of the Universidad del Valle, an activity led by the rector of the university, Roberto Moreno. The program included visits to the Ixchel Museum of Indigenous Costume, the Popol Vuh Museum and the Ludwig von Hayek Library. At the latter, the poet Amable Sánchez Torres recited selected texts from his collection of poems. All three are located on the campus of the Universidad Francisco Marroquín. The president of AMMPE World also attended the conference "New Findings at El Mirador", given by the North American archaeologist Richard Hansen, in the Luis Cardoza y Aragón auditorium of the Mexican Embassy in Guatemala. A tour of Antigua and, later, her participation in the "New Ibero-American Women Writers" conference closed Elia Simeone's program of activities in Guatemala.
