Google has launched a new platform called "Transparencia Chile", which aims to counteract political disinformation, especially in the context of the imminent constitutional plebiscite in Chile. This initiative provides detailed information on political and electoral advertisements displayed on Google and YouTube platforms.
The main objective of "Transparencia Chile" is to increase the visibility of political advertising, revealing details such as the identity of the advertisers, the investment made in such ads, the frequency of their appearances, among other relevant aspects. This tool is designed to empower citizens in their active participation in the democratic process, facilitating access to crucial information during election periods.
Nicolás Schubert, Manager of Policy and Government Affairs at Google Chile, has stressed the importance of transparency for the health of democracy and the quality of content. Activated since September, "Transparency Chile" only contains recent data, but it is expected to remain operational for future electoral events in the country, continuously contributing to the democratic process.
In addition to this initiative, three additional tools have been introduced in Chile:
Fact CheckExplorer: facilitates the verification of data and information, used by journalists and fact checkers worldwide.
Reverse Image Search: helps verify the credibility and context of images, providing information such as history and metadata.
Prebunking: communication technique that seeks to mentally immunize the public against future manipulation attempts through specifically designed messages.
